Things That Grow Week 1

During the last few weeks of school, we will begin our final unit for the school year

“Things That Grow”. In this unit, children explore how living things grow, using observations,

experiments and books. In this unit’s stories, children will hear about ducks who find a

special home, a new baby on a farm, a boy who grows from a baby to a school-age

boy and a girl who discovers the joys of growing vegetables. We will continue to work

on letters, letter sounds, and rhyming words and participate in other math, science,

music poetry and art activities.

Theme concepts for this unit:

• Living things grow and have life cycles
• Living things reproduce, and the offspring are the same kind of plant
• or animal as the parents
• Living things need food, water and proper living conditions to survive
• Immature living things need special care
• Living things interact, and among animals, there are predators and prey

OWL Unit 5 Weeks 1 & 2

OWL Unit 5 Weeks 1 & 2

This week we will begin our next unit, Shadows and Reflections. In this unit, children explore shadows and reflections using observations, experiments, and books to learn about what makes a shadow and a reflection. During story time, children will hear about a girl playing by a still pond, a puppy who thinks he is a kitten, a crocodile collecting reflections in a pail, a sleepy boy who sees a shadow save a cat, and a raccoon who has an adventure with only his reflection as company. Children will continue to learn about letters, letter sounds, and counting concrete objects. 

Theme Concepts for this Unit

• Reflections are images thrown back from a shiny surface
• There must be light, or there can be no reflection
• Mirrors and still water reflect light well; dull surfaces do not
• If water is moving, its reflections are blurry and crooked
• Objects are opaque, translucent or transparent
• Shadows are dark areas made when an object blocks light
• The sizes of shadows vary, depending on how close an object is to the light source

Unit 2 - World of Color

Welcome back!  We hope had a wonderful vacation week.

We are continuing our unit on colors. 

This week we are reading:

Dogs Colorful Day

Activities
Dog's Colorful day - Students recalled how Dog obtained a variety of colors on his white coat such  as a red drip of jam

Making a book of colors = Students will color a picture to match the color word printed on the page.

Sequencing Dog's Colorful Day - Students will sequence the events of Dog's Colorful day.

World of Color

Theme –  Next week we will begin Unit 4 of the Owl, World of Color. During this unit students will interact with colors explore topics such as color mixing, stains, fading, camouflage, and color patterns. Students will learn that color can be found in nature, that color can carry information, that paints and dyes are used to color things, colors can be mixed to make new colors and that sun and washing can make colors fade.

Small Groups –

Science – Students will work with colorfast and non color fast materials. They will see how colors bleed when they are not color fast. They will make connections to this and doing laundry.

Math – Students will use pictures from our story to make a pattern.

Math – Students will learn about different shapes as they play shape bingo.

January 22, 2019

The Lucky Ducks have been continuing our Wind and Water Unit.  Last week talked about how the wind can move things and the difference between heavy and lite.  We have also been discussing what items are repellent (water rolls off) and absorbent (it soaks water in).

This week we are discussing the forms water can take - liquid, solid and gas.  Today we froze water outside and boiled water to watch the steam.
