Water Table - Squirting out the fire - Each flame has a numeral written on it.  Students put out the fire by squirting the flame the same amount of times as the numeral.

This week we will continue our unit about Community Helpers. Here are the theme concepts for this unit:

• A community is a group of people with something in common.
• There are people in our community that help us
• Everybody contributes to the welfare of the community
• We are all members of multiple communities
• Some communities have their own traditions

The questions we will be answering in this unit are:

• What is a community?
• Who are the members of a community that help us?
• What communities are you a member of?
• How can you identify community workers?
• What can you do to contribute to your community?

January 19, 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Burlington High School received an anonymous Skype phone call this afternoon threatening the school.  The Emergency Response Team was immediately gathered, which includes school personnel and the Burlington Police Department.  After evaluating the situation, and due to the fact that many other schools in Massachusetts received this type of threat last Friday, and many more today, the police assessment was that this was a low level threat and most likely a hoax.

Students at the BECC were dismissed as a result of this threat (those students in our morning programs were already home).  All BECC employees did a fantastic job of keeping the children calm in this atypical situation.

At this time, school is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.  There will be an increased police presence in the all of the Burlington Schools tomorrow during both arrival and dismissal times, and we will update everyone if the situation changes.

Going forward, a reverse 911 call should go out to all families notifying them of any situation.  BECC staff will follow-up with phone calls to make sure that we make contact directly with you or another one of your child’s emergency contacts.

On Wednesday afternoon, please check your child’s backpack when he or she gets home as there will be a letter describing the specific BECC procedures in more detail.

Snow!

Snow!

The Lucky Ducks had a great time playing in the snow.  They all worked on putting on their own snow gear and had a blast!  We made snow angels - even though there is only a little bit of snow.  Even though we were out for a short time it was well worth the effort to play in the snow.

We will continue our snow unit.  Today we made paper snow globes.  Over the past few days we have been working on making groups of 3, drawing self portraits, and working on positional words.  

While we were reading Stella the Snow Queen, we read a silly sentence  about Polar Bears eating snowflakes.  This prompted many questions about Polar Bears.  So using two non-fiction books about Polar Bears we began to search.  Unfortunately, we did not find our answer and had to continue looking online.  

Some facts we learned about Polar Bears

• A baby Polar Bear is a cub
• They live in the arctic
• They live in dens
• Their fur is clear and looks white because of the reflection from the snow.
• Their skin is black underneath

Our big question of what do they eat was finally answered with seal and fish.
